Emma Sutherland is a mixed-media artist exploring thresholds and in-betweens. These transitional spaces, tangible and intangible, are the foundation of her artistic practice. A desire to understand the world and her place in it has led to the creation of artworks that highlight these liminal moments and also create a new shared space for contemplation.
Painting has become integral in creating these spaces. A strong focus on materials and mark making is utilised for the in-betweens to feel palpable and often employs multiple panels within a single artwork to offer alternative entryways. It might be a colour, texture, or image that a viewer is captured by.
Lately, she is questioning, what makes a space sacred? Is it the existent space, shrine, relics, ritual, or personal interaction that defines the experience? How many elements are needed for something profane to become spiritual?
